Position Summary and Responsibilities

Position Summary:  This position transports patients to and from the State Security Program, Adult Treatment Center, and the Sexual Predator Treatment program as assigned for doctor appointments, and court cases as ordered, or as assigned by supervisor, or Chief of safety and security.  This position also maintains security of patients during court hearings, and hospital stays, where they remain with the patient. This position maintains all transport equipment and manages security for the patient during transports to other facilities and appointments. This position also operates as a regular SSOI assisting other SSOI’s while not transporting. Provides immediate response to emergency situations dealing with patients, staff, and visitors, pursuing, searching for, apprehending, and returning walk away, or escaping patients. . These situations may include volatile, or riot situations, as well as providing assistance caring for dangerous, hostile, or combative patients.   Will work outside normal hours on occasion.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:  

  • Transports patients and residents providing security during the transports. Arranges/assists in arranging transport of both. Provides security at hospital during patient stays. Provides courtroom security regarding patients and residents during court proceedings.
  • Maintains equipment needed for secure transports in good working order, and ensures all necessary equipment is ready for an immediate transport need. Participates in fire trainings, and firefighting to provides fire services to all patients and staff. Responds to calls for emergency fire services when not transporting. As necessary provides fire rescue. Provides first aid and CPR as needed. Assists in fire drills, and fire extinguisher checks as needed monthly, and fills out required reports.
  • Backup property and other staff as needed between transports, responding to emergency situations, and pursues searches, apprehends, and returns walk aways and escapees. Assists in control centers, and campus patrols as needed during any down time for transports.
  • Works various positions filling in as SSOI during down time from transports. Provides breaks to patients, attends the secure door position, and control centers, as well as roving duties when assigned. Rotates through all positions during any down time from transports.
  • Prepares patients and resident for transports from all programs, prior to transporting them. Returns patients to proper unit upon arrival back at hospital, ensuring they are securely in the appropriate area.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Valid Kansas driver’s license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.

  • Be able to demonstrate SCBA and Bunker Gear proficiency, and complete Department of Corrections or KDADS training within the first 6 months of employment, o as assigned.

  • Requires an approved drug test approved by the Kansas Department of Administration unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties.

  • Handle With Care Certification within two weeks of employment and maintain certification throughout employment

  • First Aid/CPR/AEC Certification within 60-days of employment and maintain certification throughout employment

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • One year or more experience in the following:  corrections, security, law enforcement and fire protection.

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements

  • Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
